Jesus you told us in John 10:10 that,

The thief does not come, except to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Lord, we ask you to not only enter into our lives but stay, so that we can experience the abundance of your mercy and favor every day in our life. Let our life be a testament to your abundance and the inability of the thief to steal, kill, and destroy that which you have given us.

Jesus taught and shared with His disciples a lot of things, and during that time, His disciples wanted to learn how to pray.

So in Matthew 6:9 (MEV), He said, “Therefore pray in this manner:

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

In the first few opening words of prayer, Jesus is providing direction for our prayer.

He is making sure our prayer, our request is directed to heaven, where the Father is seated, and the request is addressed correctly.

First, let us understand the meaning of two words; prayer, and hallowed.

Merriam-Webster defines prayer as:

  • an address (such as a petition) to God in word or thought
  • a set order of words used in praying

And hallowed is defined in Merriam-Webster as:

  • Holy, consecrated
  • Sacred, revered

When we pray or request for something, we have to address the request to our holy, consecrated, sacred, revered, Father in heaven.  His name is so holy, consecrated, sacred and revered, that His name is not even used, not written, not spoken, not even whispered.

Jesus told us to pray to “our” Father. This one word in the prayer is very powerful and profound.

Our is defined in Merriam-Webster as:

  • of or relating to us or ourselves or ourself especially as possessors or possessor, agents or agent, or objects or object of an action

Our Father, who is in heaven, is our possessor, our agent, and the person of action, to answer our prayer.

In John 10:25-30 (MEV), Jesus makes an astonishing statement. He talks about those that are His, and more importantly, those that are the Fathers.

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you did not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life. They shall never perish, nor shall anyone snatch them from My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them from My Father’s hand. My Father and I are one.”

When we pay close attention to the words Jesus spoke, we see that these sheep are not only the hand of Jesus but also in the hand of the Father as  Jesus and the Father are one.

Therefore when we are praying, we need to realize that we are not praying alone, but with Jesus, as His Father placed us in the hands of Jesus.

Proverbs 4:23, states;

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.

Lord, we pray for wisdom to guard and protect our hearts. With the wisdom we found in Your Word, grant us the knowledge and insight required to keep it safe with the diligence required, so the issues that become lingering problems will not flow from it and affect us daily.

It’s rare to come across scripture that gives instructions to a specific group or type of people. That is what makes this overlooked scripture in 1 Peter 3:7 (MEV) very interesting:

Likewise, you husbands, live considerately with your wives, giving honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they too are also heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

For married men that pray, the above verse highlights two conditions that must be met for their prayers not to be hindered.

The first is to live considerately or with consideration towards your wife. Merriam-Webster defines considerately and consideration as:
• marked by or given to careful thought and sympathetic regard.
• continuous and careful thought
• thoughtful of the rights and feelings of others
• an opinion obtained by reflection
• the inducement to a contract or other legal transaction

A husband has to live with careful thought towards his wife; he has to be sympathetic, obtain opinion through reflection, and thoughtful of her rights and feelings.

Without consideration towards his wife, the husbands’ legal transaction (prayer) can get delayed.

The second condition is in giving honor, and honor is defined in Merriam-Webster as:
• to regard or treat (someone) with admiration and respect
• to give special recognition to
• to live up to or fulfill the terms of
• good name or public esteem

In addition, a husband needs to treat his wife with regard, admiration, and respect. Giving special recognition to her and living up to and fulfilling the terms of their covenant (marriage) for her good name and public esteem.

These two conditions are required for a husband’s prayer to be unhindered. Merriam-Webster defines hindered as:
• to make slow or difficult the progress of
• to hold back: prevent
• to delay, impede, or prevent action

When the husband does not meet the above two conditions, he makes slows and difficult the answering of his prayers. He inadvertently holds back, prevents, delays, impedes, and prevents it from being answered.

In the first secret, we learned how to reach the clouds, and the second highlighted how to pierce the clouds. This third secret applicable to husbands indicates the requirements for express handling of prayer requests.

These secrets, coupled with these instructive words from Ephesians 5:25-31, should provide great insight into the workings of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it, that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, and that He might present to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. In this way men ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord cares for the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.”

Let’s pray for those that are hungry and thirsty that they might find their needs met in the Lord.

May they find food in His house to feed their body and nourish the soul. That through their hunger and thirst, they discover His grace and mercy.

Jesus shared this with us in John 6:35. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

In Sirach 35:21 DRA (Douay–Rheims Bible) are words that help our prayers pierce the clouds.

The prayer of him that humbleth himself, shall pierce the clouds: and till it come nigh he will not be comforted: and he will not depart till the most High behold.

If we delve further, we find this verse in Lamentation 3:44 KJV (King James Version)

Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

From Sirach 35:20, we learn how to reach the clouds in prayer, and in Lamentation 3:44, we learn that a cloud prevents our prayers from passing through.

The secret held in Sirach 35:21, holds the key to pierce the clouds and lets our prayers reach God.

Once our prayers pierce the clouds then the comforting words of Sirach 35:21-26 CEB should bring us peace.

The prayer of the humble passes through the clouds, and it will never stop until it draws near to God.

It will never withdraw until the Most High takes notice, gives justice for the righteous, and executes judgment.

Indeed, the Lord will never delay, nor will he be patient with them until he crushes the power of the unmerciful, until he exacts vengeance on the nations, until he removes the multitude of abusive people and shatters the authority of the unrighteous, until he repays individuals according to their deeds and the works of human beings according to their thoughts, until he decides the case of his people and makes them glad by his mercy.

His mercy is timely in a period of distress, like rain clouds in a dry season.

No matter our differences, perceptions, or understanding. Let us pray to live out the command of love, given to us by Jesus in strength despite the circumstances.

Let our capacity to love each other increase every day without measure, including its fruits of love, patience, and kindness.

John 13:34-35 – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

We learn something exciting when we study some books of the bible considered by some to be apocryphal and for others deuterocanonical.

Why the debate, and what do those words mean, is not as important as what we can learn from these books.

In Sirach 35:20 CEB (Common English Bible) are words that brought me great insight.

Those who serve with goodwill will be accepted, and their prayer will reach to the clouds.

For our prayers to reach the clouds, we have to serve with goodwill. Merriam-Webster defines goodwill as:
• a kindly feeling of approval and support
• benevolent interest or concern
• cheerful consent
• willing effort

Serve is defined in Merriam-Webster as:
• to be a servant
• to do military or naval service
• to be favorable, opportune, or convenient
• to furnish or supply with something needed or desired

What this means is that for our prayers to reach the clouds we have to be a servant, in service, looked upon favorably at the right time, and supply a need; that is a kindly feeling of approval and support, with interest and concern, with cheerful consent and willing effort.

All of this is required just for our prayers to reach the clouds.

Let us pray for all the people of the Lord working to restore His Kingdom on earth. For those living out the gospel of the Kingdom of God and Heaven that they might find favor with the Lord.

May their needs be on our minds as we pray and request for their fulfillment. Keep them safe and away from the persecution that hinders the gospel.

As written in Ephesian 6:18

Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
